War of words Scholar finds value in linguistic ferment
The 21st-century version of the English language is a glorious mess. It befuddles students, and persnickety teachers who would like for its rules of pronunciation, usage, grammar and spelling to be as logical as mathematics. However, with a measure of historical context from an expert, one can learn to stop worrying and love (or at least appreciate) the linguistic muddle.
