Old 97s: Chemistry makes them headliners

Despite two opening acts and a late start for a show on a school night, Old 97's showed why they were the headliners Monday.

The Texas twang-pop-rock quartet ripped through old fan favorites of their 15-year catalog while relying heavily on new songs from their latest album, "Blame It On Gravity," many of which are sure to become mainstays at future Old 97's shows.

Chief among them is "Early Morning," a pounding standout on the album was turned into a highlight on stage, with normally mild-mannered drummer Philip Peeples unleashing on his kit like a mad man and lead guitarist Ken Bethea squeezing out a hurricane of sound from his electric guitar.

Veteran West Side Story' director helms Alabama Shakespeare Festival production

by Alec Harvey -- Birmingham News
    Sunday July 20, 2008, 6:37 AM

The opening song of "West Side Story" features Riff and his friends singing the "Jet Song"

"'I HEAR YOU DO 'West Side Stories.'"

That's what Geoffrey Sherman, producing artistic director at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, said when he first called Karen Azenberg about directing the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents classic in Montgomery.

And Sherman was right. The Montgomery show, which opens tonight (Sunday, July 20, 2008), marks Azenberg's 12th production in nine states, a theater trek that started 20 years ago.

Wizard rock may be silly, but it's fun

    by Matt Cuthbert
    Monday July 21, 2008, 11:07 AM

This weekend's wizard wrock concert at the North Shelby Library drew in nearly 100 enthusiastic Harry Potter fans. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was certainly an entertaining experience.

I talked to a couple of the bands who were performing and found them to be much more down to earth than you'd assume of a group that travels around singing about Harry Potter. There were a few fans who might have been a little over-obsessed, but mostly everyone there was just having fun.

'Dark Knight' smart and thrilling, but also exhausting

    by Matt Cuthbert
    Monday July 21, 2008, 9:33 AM

Like the rest of the world, I saw The Dark Knight this weekend. Everyone seems to be singing is praises, gushing over how it was the best comic book movie ever, best movie of the year, or something of the sort. And while I don't have anything negative to say -- it really is a great movie -- I wouldn't set the bar quite so high. Continue reading "'Dark Knight' smart and thrilling, but also exhausting" »

Grousing's not the way to build a better City Stages

by Mary Colurso -- Birmingham News
    Friday July 18, 2008, 6:01 AM

There are no easy answers for City Stages.

Its money problems continue, as they have for the past eight years, and Birmingham's largest music festival is likely to enter 2009 with a debt of $250,000 or more.

That's disheartening news, although organizers say they can handle another shortfall and have posted the dates for the next fest, June 19-21, on the City Stages Web site.

Naysayers have called for the festival's demise, saying enough is enough. Other critics have suggested that it's time for a new group of leaders to take over the fest and reinvent it.

Simplistic solutions -- "get bands people WANT to see" -- have been offered in blunt Internet postings, by folks who are dissatisfied, antagonistic or simply exercising their First Amendment right to vent.

Some of the Web comments have taken what I call the Ross Perot approach: Get a smart business person in there, someone who really knows what he or she is doing, and just fix it.

Although its official release isn't for another week, it's difficult to think of Wild Sweet Orange's new CD, We Have Cause To Be Uneasy, as new at all. As one of the brightest spots in Birmingham's music scene, we've been hearing these songs filter out to us for a few years now. But after numerous promises, the album is finally here, and it plays like a joyous homecoming. Continue reading "Wild Sweet Orange's new album gives listners no cause to be uneasy" »

E3 Sequel News: God of War, Call of Duty, Halo Wars

    by Joe Crowe
    Monday July 21, 2008, 10:44 PM

There's something in my eye. Can you get it?
God of War III will provide more awesomeness. God of War III was announced for the PS3. God of War was created by Birmingham native There were no details in the trailer except for Kratos gadding madly about doing godly, warlike things.

Halo Wars denied until 2009: A military-combat version of Halo, will be out in 2009, not 2008. No release date was ever set, but Halo fans anticipated a look at it during E3, and they got nothin'. Nothin'!

Call of Duty: World at War players will run the Russian army in one segment, fending off Hitler and capturing Berlin. Jack Bauer from 24, who pretends to be actor Kiefer Sutherland, is the star voice.

E3 News: Massive Action Game, Bikini Zombie Slayers

    by Joe Crowe
    Monday July 21, 2008, 10:43 PM

"Hello, ma'am. Eat brains around here often?"
Three words: Bikini Zombie Slayers. A Wii game involves bikini-clad women fighting zombies. I require nothing further. Players must shake the Wii-mote to wipe zombie blood off the sword, or it might get stuck in the zombie victims. Put red velvet cake in there and it will have all of my favorite things.

Massive Action for PS3: At E3, Sony previewed Massive Action Game. The game will have online battles between up to 256 players.  The title is temporary, but it should be the actual title. It tells us everything we need to know.

The spokesman said it offers "an intense and long lasting shooter experience." That is just delightful.
