'Ghost Adventures' visits Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham
by
Matt Cuthbert
Friday November 14, 2008, 10:50 AM
Sloss Furnaces sits just east of the Birmingham, Alabama skyline.Sloss is probably the most famous of Alabama's haunted attractions, and of course every Halloween it's converted into a haunted house as Sloss Fright Furnace.
There have been more than 100 reports of suspected paranormal activity at Sloss Furnaces recorded in Birmingham Police records. From minor incidents such as steam whistles apparently blowing by themselves, to major sightings and the rare physical assault. It is interesting to note that the majority of these reports happen in the months of September and October at night, during the old "graveyard shift."Some merely dismiss the occurrences as Halloween hoaxes; others believe it is the restless of spirit of the sadistic foreman, Slag.
I'm so glad that I work within walking distance of such a creepy place.

'Ghost Hunters' offer a spooky Halloween
by Dave Sharp -- Birmingham News
Thursday October 30, 2008, 10:40 AM
Much of my childhood was spent reading ghost stories, watching horror films, and being wary of what might lurk in the shadows of a dark room. It's an interest that has carried over into adulthood. So naturally, I was intrigued when a series called "Ghost Hunters" premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2004.
Ghost hunters and leaders of The Atlantic Paranormal Society Jason Hawes, left, and Grant Wilson will conduct a live investigation on Halloween when the return to Fort Delaware for Sci-Fi's "Ghost Hunters."Eerie entertainment: Treat the family to a night of fun this Halloween

Jack-o-lanters provide a warm glow on Halloween. It's eerie -- one might almost say supernatural -- the way Halloween seems to take on a little more punch when it falls on a weekend.
That certainly seems to hold true for this Friday night, when the spectrum of activities will range all the way from street-level trick-or-treating to a couple of large-scale concerts.
FREE BOO-rito on Halloween at Chipotle Mexican Grill!
by Wendy McCormick
Thursday October 30, 2008, 9:52 AM

I called the manager at my local Chipotle. He said that it is a company-wide event... so all Chipotle restaurant locations should be participating.
I also asked him how lenient they would be on the whole costume thing. He said they would be pretty open-minded. They mostly just want you to come in and try their burritos.
I bet if you made a tin-foil hat and wrapped some additional foil around your waist... you'd probably pass the costume test. Any other ideas?
p.s. Thank you, Sasha, for the tip about this!

This trick or treater is gitty for goodies at this year's Boo at the Zoo.Drivers and parents of young trick-or-treaters take precautions to ensure the night stays safe, said Clay Ingram, AAA Alabama spokesman.
Citing federal agency statistics, Ingram said that the number of traffic fatalities on Halloween rises an average of 30 percent, to 151 deaths, when Oct. 31 falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Trick-or-treaters should beware flames, make selves visible, Red Cross says
That caution came from the Madison-Marshall Chapter of the American Red Cross, along with several other ways to keep kids safe this Halloween.
"Halloween can be a fun time, but it can be a disastrous time if we don't take the proper precautions," said Shirley Crutcher, director for emergency services.

Sophie Traywick, a fifth-grader at Greystone Elementary School, is dressing as Hannah Montana because she loves her show and music. Now, you're most likely to see Hannah Montana and Indiana Jones, rather than the Wicked Witch of the West and Casper the Friendly Ghost. (We'll let you decide who's scarier).
The past few years have seen a definite shift toward pop culture-driven costumes on Halloween, retailers say, and this year is no exception. Birmingham streets on Friday night will be filled with little Hannahs and Indianas, as well as Disney princesses and characters from recent movies such as "Batman," "Spiderman" and "Star Wars."
