The Saban effect continues: Tuberville out at Auburn

Tommy Tuberville to Mark Richt: "Hey, you lost to Nick Saban too. How come you get to keep your job?"
Tommy Tuberville, Sylvester Croom, Phillip Fulmer, Tommy Bowden. All four had a head coaching job in August. All four lost that job after being trounced by Alabama. That's exactly one third of the head football coaches who had the misfortune to play Nick Saban's Crimson Tide this year looking for new jobs.

It's not clear yet if Tuberville was fired or resigned under pressure, but it was made clear a few days ago, he wanted an eleventh season at Auburn to right the ship after a rocky tenth season.

Now there's no such luck. Charles Goldberg of The Birmingham News and Evan Woodbery of the Press-Register will have more information as the night goes on, so check al.com/auburnfootball for the latest.

Video: 2008 Alabama football in review

Posted by al.com December 02, 2008 7:23 PM

After a shocking 34-10 romp over the Clemson Tigers in the Georgia Dome to kick off the 2008 season, Alabama opened up at home with the Tulane Green Wave. Even though it wasn't the prettiest of games, the Crimson Tide relied on stout defense and Javier Arenas's 87-yard punt return for a touchdown to lead them to a 20-6 victory.

Terrence Cody and Alonzo Lawrence celebrate the 36-0 shutout of Auburn.
The Alabama Crimson Tide all but erased the agonizing memories of 6 straight years of defeat to Auburn with a 36-0 drubbing of the Tigers in Bryant-Denny Stadium last Saturday. With the streak-busting victory, Alabama finished the regular season undefeated (12-0) and earned a spot in a national semi-final game in Atlanta with Urban Meyer's AP No. 2 Florida for the SEC Championship. Alabama collected a perfect 4.0 on this report card and has entrenched themselves at the head of the class (BCS) with an unblemished record. Nick Saban and company have defied critics, curses, streaks and other jinxes to complete an unfathomable turnaround from last year's underwhelming 7-6 season. Continue reading this entry for a quick season review, Iron Bowl photo gallery, Iron Bowl highlight video and the complete report card results.

Kareem Jackson and the Tide are still No. 1 in the major polls.
The AP and coaches' polls are out today, and while Texas Tech's loss to Oklahoma helped Alabama secure nearly all the first place votes, the picture beyond No. 1 is cloudy.

The AP voters ranked Florida No. 2, just a few points ahead of the Sooners. The coaches' poll (which counts in making up the BCS standings) had the Tide solidly at No. 1 and Oklahoma as the new No. 2.

The new BCS rankings will be released this evening between 6:00 and 6:30 central time.

Kareem Jackson, Javier Arenas and the rest of the special teams had, arguably, their best game of the year against Mississippi State.
It was a downright frigid night in Tuscaloosa for Alabama's 32-7 victory over Mississippi State. Things warmed up quickly though with the efforts of Kareem Jackson, Javier Arenas and the rest of the special teams. The two defensive backs accounted for almost half of the points 'Bama put on the board with one blocked punt for a safety by Jackson and two Arenas punt returns-one inside the State 3 and one for an 80 yard score. While the fans didn't hand out any grades below a "B", it is obvious they believe that John Parker Wilson and the rest of the offense needs to improve before the final 3 games of the season (Auburn, Florida, Bowl Game). Continue reading this entry for the complete results and check out the additional compliments/criticisms at the end.
